Vehicular burglaries and thefts seem to have increased in our neighborhood over the last few weeks. This is not unique to our neighborhood because this same issue is being experienced in all regions of the city of Austin. It is also likely that the full extent of this problem is underrepresented because some residents who have experienced a vehicle burglary may not have reported it.
Our HOA is exploring steps that may help reduce these vehicle burglaries and thefts, but in the meantime, we offer the following suggestions:
1) Park your vehicles inside your garage;
2) If you must park your vehicle outside, keep your vehicle locked at all times;
Note: In addition to being a bad idea from a security viewpoint, parking any vehicle on the street in CC overnight between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. is a violation of the CC deed restrictions and may result in a violation notice being issued.
3) Remove valuables from vehicles or keep them out of sight;
4) Consider installing motion sensor lights and security cameras (particularly for the driveway and doorbell or front porch area)
Question: What do I do if I find that my vehicle is currently being broken into or has already been broken into or stolen?
Answer: If the crime is currently in progress immediately call 911 and report it. Austin police officers will respond to crimes currently in progress. Try to get a description of the thief or their vehicle if possible. Do not confront the individuals or attempt a “citizen’s arrest”. If you discover your vehicle has already been burglarized or stolen, call 311 (not 911) and report it.
Your HOA encourages all homeowners to consider the above suggestions and take steps to protect their property and make our neighborhood safer and more secure.
