TxDot project in Austin at south end of Boulder Ln and 620

This project will modernize and enhance the intersection at south Boulder Lane by replacing the existing traffic signal and related components.  The most visible improvement will be the conversion of the existing span wire used to mount the signal heads.  Steel mast arms will be used which reduce the movement of the signal heads in high winds and result in less overall maintenance.  In addition, the sensors that detect a vehicle along with the entire control system will be replaced.  The signing, pavement striping, and pedestrian elements will also be upgraded.  All of these factors will result in a safer and more efficient intersection for all roadway users.

The project ID is 0683-02-070.  This intersection is one of four on RM 620 with similar work, the others are Concordia, Wilson Park, and Four Points.  While being concerned about protecting trees in this are the project inspector verified the foundation is outside the drip line of the trees.  He explained it was a challenge to fit this within the right-of-way with the underground utilities (gas, water, and fiber optic) and the existing traffic signal which must remain in service.  He will remind the contractor of the importance of not damaging these trees in any way.

The new traffic signal will not have a signal head over the shoulder and the elevation views below may provide a good idea of how the final product will look.  Often there are flags and stakes beyond our area of work so underground utility locations are known.  When a utility locate request is ordered everything within the entire intersection is marked which may not correlate to the work area.  Once construction is complete the City of Austin will maintain and operate this signal via an agreement with TxDOT.
